AN INTERVIEW WITH | THE WOMEN OF ALIDA & MILLER

A chat with the mother and daughter duo, Margaret & Kit, behind Alida & Miller. The women whom have an incredible talent & eye in the world of interiors, whether this is through staging of property or through the complete renovation. Be inspired and let's start you on the Alida & Miller journey...

What were you doing the moment before you started this interview.
We were in Byron at one of our favorite shops, Hope and May, sourcing products for a new client. We made a quick stop at Bare Blend for a smoothie for my 2-year old, and now we are back in the office finalizing the finishing details for our Cuban Night while the babies snooze.

You both balance family and business on a daily bases, what do you love the most about the juggle.
The fact that women these days can do it all without being judged. It’s so nice having the kids at work with us, and I feel so so lucky that I don’t have to compromise. And from a mother daughter perspective, its great working with my mum. We are on the same brain length and have our own language; we find it easy to tap into each other’s ideas. If we are annoying each other, we let each other know, and there are no hard feelings. That’s probably my favorite part.

Margaret adds... and I get to see my daughter and grandchildren everyday.

Talk us through the birth of Alida and Miller?
Margaret starts...My husband and I started flipping houses over 25yrs ago on the northern beaches of Sydney; every one would mention what an amazing job we had done with the styling and renovation the houses. When we moved to Byron, we continued buying and selling houses and getting to know all the real-estate agents. To my surprise, 3 years ago we where invited to property style for McGrath Real Estate Byron Bay. So Alida and Miller was born. My poor kids have lived on site through every Reno, so it must be in Kits DNA. That’s why our company is called Alida and Miller, they are the middle names of my kids, I would never have been able to achieve all this without them.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations?
Back to Kit… In life, my mother and grandmother, and Frida Kahlo. She was so ahead of her time and never afraid to be bold or step out of the box. In business, Justina Blakeney, I love her aesthetics’, her endless talent, her art, interior design style, and her beautiful books. And on top of all this, she is a young mum so I really look up to her. Margaret adds…My son and daughter.

You're holding a dinner party for 5 quests, dead or alive, who would you invite.
Chloe Sevigny, Martin Lawrence Bullard, Princess Diana, David Bowie, Ellen DeGeneres, add cocktails of course.

You have worked with the ultra talented Pepper Heart on the design of your new webpage, what was the inspiration behind it, and what do you want your followers to get out of it.
We want our followers to see the real us, the website is so simple in its aesthetics, we didn’t want to hide anything. We wanted our photos and work to speak for itself. We have been reluctant to share our journey as interior stylists, but we have grown so much, and have had such amazing feedback from people who’s opinion really counts. So now we are finally ready to share what we do. We felt Pepper Heart understood exactly what we were looking for in a webpage. She just got us.

Coffee spot of choice?
Living in Bangalow/Byron Bay we are soooo spoilt for choice, but our 6am daily coffee spot is Sparrow in Bangalow, and during the day the Woods also in Bangalow, and Bay Leaf in Byron Bay - the cold drip is amazing.

It's 9am on a Sunday morning, where will we find you both?
Margaret… catching up on ZZZZ’s. Kit… I have already been up since 5am with the babies so you can usually find us at the beach at Brunswick Heads, or getting ready to go on a day trip to find a cute old town to wander round looking for antiques.

Favorite colour to work with.
Deep, rich colours like Indigo and Mustard.

One, no fail, styling tip for your home.
Plants, plants and more plants.

What’s next for the brand?
2016 has been a big year for Alida and Miller, and adjusting to the brand expansion. 2017 is looking even bigger. We have been taken on by some amazing clients, with the largest renovation projects to date, and we can't wait to share them with every one.
